Skye Terriers are often referred two as a dog for the more experienced, and some owners claim they can be difficult to train with. The breed are often focused in what it is doing, and easy to deal with. Although there are breeds that are characterized as even more energetic, this is still a breed that requires his daily walks. The breed appreciate physical activity, but are not as demanding as many other breeds.

Grouping of skye terrier: American Kennel Club places the breed in the group «terriers». United Kennel Club files the breed in the category «terrier». Skye Terrier have been approved by FCI and their dog breed list as #75 in section «Small Terriers» (3.2) in the group «terriers» (registered 1987-06-24). Also recognized by the Canadian Kennel as «terriers».
