Shiba Inu are in the group of primitive dog breeds. The genes of these dogs is therefore less affected by diseases which are characterized by modern breeding. Shiba Inu are spitz dogs. This is arctic breeds where the origin of the northern hemisphere is one of the common features.

Shiba Inus sheds, but less than many other breeds. Easy grooming of the coat is one of several advantages of this breed.

Shiba Inus are often referred two as a dog for the more experienced, and some owners claim they can be difficult to train with. The breed are often focused in what it is doing, and easy to deal with. Although there are breeds that are characterized as even more energetic, this is still a breed that requires his daily walks. The breed demands some training, although there are other breeds that require more ventilation of their owners.

Some dogs can be a bit reserved and skeptical strangers, but there exists considerable variation within the breed. Although aggression toward other dogs is not characteristic of the breed, such individual characteristics occur. The breed is considered as one of the more kid-friendly dog breeds, but do not forget: Young children should never be left alone with dogs. Some argue that children-friendly dog breeds don't exist, and in many ways that is a valid point. Although this breed can be gentle, one should never forget that they are animals after all. All puppies have a tendency to chew on whatever it comes across and explore the world with their mouths, but in adulthood, this breed is also one of those pieces at least.

Some would argue that barks less than other breeds, albeit some owners may find this to be a bogus claim. Like all dogs is also this very playful as a puppy but calms down often in adulthood. Most dogs of this particular breed will do just fine staying home alone.

The dog's appearance: A shiba inu ,with his wolf-like appearance, is a medium-sized breed type, short coat, with an average body type, standing ears, short curled tail, and eye-catching appearance.

Disorders: The health problems for shiba inus depends on the dog's lines and breeding and can vary between individuals. Reported health issues can include hip dysplasia, PRA, hypothyroidism, ordinary diseases and other diseases and health problems.

Good to know about the dog: The shiba inu originates from Japan. Expected age will vary, but anything from 12 to 15 years is within expectations. The breed is a relatively popular and there is still someone who advertises puppies for sale. Shiba Inus were initially bred for hunting small game and flush birds.

Grouping: American Kennel Club places the breed in the group «non-sporting breeds». United Kennel Club files the breed in the category «northern breed». Shiba Inu is included in F.C.I. database of dog breeds as #257 in section «Asian spitz» (5.5) in the group «spitz» (registered 1992-06-15). Also recognized by the Canadian Kennel as «non-sporting dogs».
