Neapolitan Mastiffs are a versatile breed and being used as a guard dog. It is therefore as guardian of the home or property. Neapolitan Mastiff have been used as a fighting dog (unfortunately), but this does not affect the geneetics of the breed today. USA, Canada, UK and most other countries fortunately ban organized dog fights today.

This dog breed are characterized by high IQ if we compare to many other breeds. Mental exercise should therefore be included in the daily activities.

Neapolitan Mastiffs sheds, but less than many other breeds. Easy care of the coat is one of several advantages of this breed.

The neapolitan mastiff dog should be a pleasure to to exercise with, but individual differences in the breed is expected. The breed are often focused in what it is doing, and easy to deal with. Like all dogs, dogs of this dog breed will need their daily walks. The breed demands some physical exercise, although there are other breeds that require more ventilation of their owners.

Some dogs can be a bit reserved and skeptical unfamiliar people, but there exists considerable variation within the breed. Aggression between dogs vary more between individuals than between various dog breeds, but the tendency for dog aggression is perhaps somewhat higher in neapolitan mastiff. The breed is considered as one of the more kid-friendly dog breeds, but do not forget: No dogs should never leave small children alone with dogs, regardless of breed or size. Children-friendly dogs may be a myth more than anything else, all dogs are different! As distant descendants of the wolf this dog breed still have some strong instincts. Puppies tend to play-bite, and this can increase lung adulthood if one ignores the problem. It has been argued that they drool fairly much, so avoid this breed if you think this may be a problem (a human problem that is, the dogs are fine!).

Some would argue that barks less than other breeds, albeit some owners may find this to be a bogus claim. Neapolitan Mastiffs are very well suited to the climate in slightly cooler regions, but is not as well suited to warmer climates. They do have a tendency to stay close to their owners, and a neapolitan mastiff should display little or no lust to run away.

The dog breed's physical features: A neapolitan mastiff is a one of the larger breeds, short coat, with a robust body shape, often cropped ears, comparatively long legs, short hanging tail, extremely short muzzle, and a cheerful expression.

Diseases: The health for neapolitan mastiffs is not specific to the breed and depends on more than the race itself. Reported health issues are hypothyroidism, different illnesses in canines and other dog ailments and illnesses.

Other facts about the breed: The neapolitan mastiff originates from Italy. Life expectancy will vary, but anything from 7 to 10 years is within expectations. The breed is a comparatively very popular and there is still someone who advertises puppies for sale. Neapolitan Mastiffs were initially bred for dog fighting, livestock guarding. Other names for the the breed mastino napoletano.

Neapolitan Mastiff kennel clubs: American Kennel Club places the breed in the group «working dogs». United Kennel Club files the breed in the category «guardian dog». Neapolitan Mastiff has been catalogued with FCI and their list of dog breeds as #197 in section «molossoid dogs» (2.2) in the group «pinscher and schnauzer, molossoid dogs, swiss mountain and cattle breeds» (registered 1989-11-27). Also recognized by the Canadian Kennel as «working dog breeds».
