Pointer are useful as a sled dog. They are hardy and work well as working dogs in colder climates. Pointer are hunting dogs. Pointers are good bird dogs and hunting dogs. This breed are characterized by high IQ in relation to many other dog breeds. Mental exercise should therefore be included in the daily activities.

Classification: American Kennel Club places the dog type in the group «sporting dogs». United Kennel Club files the dog type in the category «gun dog». Pointer is part of F.C.I. and their registry of breeds as #1 in section «British and Irish setters and pointers» (7.2) in the group «pointing dogs» (registered 1987-06-24). Also recognized by the Canadian Kennel as «sporting dogs».
