Hovawart are shepherd dogs. They have a strong herding instinct, which makes it perfect for herding sheep. Hovawarts are good as working dogs and is an excellent as a guard dog. It is therefore as guardian of the home or property.

The hovawart dog should be a pleasure to to exercise with, but individual differences in the dog breed is expected. A dog breed thrive in the woods, or on long air trips and is often a good companion. The breed have a great need for training, it will be best if the person responsible for the dog are active as well.

Some dogs can be a bit reserved and skeptical strangers, but there exists considerable variation within the breed. Although aggression toward other dogs is not characteristic of the breed, such individual characteristics occur.

The hovawart can be a bit uncomfortable in warmer climates. This is a robust dog that can tolerate cold and low temperatures nice and thrive winter and summer.

The dog breed's anatomy: A hovawart is a midsize dog breed, medium-length coat, with an average body , hanging ears, relatively long legs, hanging tail, and a fresh look.

Health: The health problems for hovawarts varies and can vary between individuals. Health problems are common canine disorders and other diseases and health problems.

Extra info about the breed: The hovawart were first bred in Germany. Life span will vary, but anything from 10 to 14 years is what you would expect. Hovawart puppies can be purchased online, but the selection of puppies is not always the best. Hovawarts were initially bred for guarding property and livestock, tracking robbers and fugitives.

Approved kennel clubs: United Kennel Club files the breed in the category «guardian dog». Hovawart have been approved by International Federation of Kennel Clubs and their dog breed list as #190 in section «molossoid dogs» (2.2) in the group «pinscher and schnauzer, molossoid dogs, swiss mountain and cattle breeds» (registered 1998-01-12). Also recognized by the Canadian Kennel as «working dog breeds».
