English Setter are a hunting dog breed. Setters are bird dogs and is widely used as hunting dogs. They are used for hunting where they assist in locating prey, as well as bringing prey back to the hunter.

This dog breed are characterized by high intelligence if we compare to many other dog breeds. Mental exercise should therefore be included in the daily activities.

English Setters sheds, but less than many other breeds. Although frequent care of the coat is not strictly necessary, it contributes to the dog's overall well-being and prosperity.

The english setter dog should be a pleasure to to exercise with, but individual differences in the breed type is expected. The breed dog are often focused in what it is doing, and easy to deal with. A breed type thrive in the woods, or on long air trips and is often a good companion. The breed dog have a great need for exercise, it will be best if the person responsible for the dog are active as well.

This dog breed is by nature fairly loving with unfamiliar people, but large variations occur between dogs anyway. They are usually loving with other dogs. The breed dog referred to as child-friendly, but remember: Young children should never be left alone with dogs. Some argue that children-friendly dog breeds don't exist, and in many ways that is a valid point. Although this dog breed can be gentle, one should never forget that they are animals after all. It has been argued that they drool fairly much, so avoid this breed if you think this may be a problem (a human problem that is, the dogs are fine!).

This is a robust dog that can tolerate cold and low temperatures nice and thrive winter and summer. The english setter are know for their wanderlust and should be kept in a leash.

The dog breed's appearance: A english setter is a midsize breed type, medium-length coat, with an average body type, midsized hanging ears, hanging tail, and overall a look that will get noticed everywhere.

Diseases: The health problems for english setters is not specific to the breed and varies between individuals. Health problems that may occur are comprised of hip dysplasia, hypothyroidism, ordinary diseases and other general common diseases in dogs.

Even more about the breed dog: The english setter originates from England. Expected age will vary, but anything from 10 to 12 years is possible. The breed dog is a relatively sought after and there is still someone who advertises puppies for sale. English Setters were initially bred for hunting and retrieving game birds.

Grouping: American Kennel Club places the breed dog in the group «sporting dogs». United Kennel Club files the breed dog in the category «gun dog». English Setter is part of F.C.I. and their registry of breeds as #2 in section «British and Irish setters and pointers» (7.2) in the group «pointing dogs» (registered 1987-06-24). Also recognized by the Canadian Kennel as «sporting dogs».
