Basenji are in the group of primitive dog breeds. Characteristics from these primal dogs are still prominent.

Many dogs sheds a lot, but this is not something that can be claimed onbasenji. Easy grooming of the coat is one of several advantages of this breed.

Basenjis are often referred two as a dog for the more experienced, and some owners claim they can be extensive to train with. The breed are often focused in what it is doing, and easy to deal with. Although there are breeds that are characterized as even more energetic, this is still a breed that requires his daily walks. The breed have a great need for exercise, it will be best if the person responsible for the dog are active as well.

Some dogs can be a bit reserved and skeptical strangers, but there exists considerable variation within the breed. Aggression between dogs occurs in all breeds, but is perhaps a slightly greater tendency among basenji than many other breeds. The breed is considered child friendly but generalization here can be adversely. However, you should never leave small children alone with dogs. Many dogs are good with children, but differences within the breed is also quite large. As distant descendants of the wolf this breed still have some strong instincts. Puppies tend to play-bite, and this can increase lung adulthood if one ignores the problem.

They are not amongst the loud and noisy breed, and usually does not bark that much. They are more cautious to cold than many other breeds, and clothing in winter and autumn may be required. Like all dogs is also this very playful as a puppy but calms down often in adulthood. The basenji are know for their wanderlust and should be kept in a leash. They do have issues when it comes to being home alone, so if you need to leave your dog behind this is not the breed for you.

The dog's anatomy: A basenji is a medium-sized breed, short coat, with a muscular body , midsized standing ears, short curled tail, and eye-catching appearance.

Diseases and disorders: The health for basenjis differs individually and also depends on the breeder. They includes - but is not limited to kidney disease, hypothyroidism, eye problems, common canine disorders and other health problems in dogs.

Information about the dog: The basenji originates from Africa. Life span will vary, but anything from 10 to 12 years is what would be expected. Litter varies from 4 to 6 puppies. Basenji puppies can be purchased online, but the selection of puppies is not always the best. Basenjis were initially bred for hunting . Basenjis aliases include congo dog.

Basenji kennel clubs: American Kennel Club places the breed in the group «hounds». United Kennel Club files the breed in the category «sighthound & pariah». Basenji has been catalogued with International Federation of Kennel Clubs and their list of dog breeds as #43 in section «primitive breeds» (5.6) in the group «spitz» (registered 2000-01-24). Also recognized by the Canadian Kennel as «hounds».
